So my iMac has been a turd for the past 2 years. Graphic glitches and random lockups. I installed the Fan control software, and spun the fans up to top speed, and that helps (although it is LOUD now), but last week, I upgraded to 10.6.3, and can't get the computer to run anymore. it used to randomly lock up after about 5 minutes of use, now I can't get it to finish loading the finder. I usually get the menu bar, and maybe the outline of a window, then it just freezes. no hard drive scratching, nothing. tons and tons of graphics glitches (tearing, burned shadows, colored dots, outlines).
So I started it in safe mode. computer works okay. still tons of graphics problems, but less that before. and I can use the computer.
So I pulled all my login items out, uninstalled preference panes, TRIED permanently turning off quartz extreme (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php? .. 4190553112) but that didn't seem to affect it.
as soon as I reboot into normal mode, it locks up again. safe mode is still okay (comparatively..)
What else am I forgetting to disable? the fonts and stuff seem rather benign, I don't really have that many installed..
